Fortitude is a group show centring suburban domesticity through amplifying the mundane everyday. Crossing sensorial influences from food, games to nature, Josh Howard, Nico Bauer, Tom Yousif and Mehmet Mevlutoglu document fragments from each of their own personal home lives. Collectively, they relocate the mundane and the peripheral to the centre.
Mehmet Mevlütoğlu’s works meet at the intersections of the self, the domestic and the street, in hopes of challenging people to see the everyday from a different perspective. Nico Bauer’s paintings and ink drawings delve into the crossing of interior and exterior spaces. He employs an observational practice to document travels across inner and outer suburbs of Sydney including Town Hall, Central, Sydenham, Erskineville, Lakemba, Schofields and Hornsby Heights among others. Josh Howard’s practice activates the potential of personal and domestic items as forms of communication, in particularly through his relationship with his twin brother. Tom Yousif’s practice experiments with the properties of industrial paint opposed to traditional oil paint in order to reduce the imprint of the artist hand. His work interplay's technological processes within the conventional perimeters of painting with the use of computer software and commercial vinyl cutting equipment. Through recycling imagery, he aims to revive iconoclastic art works of the past century in order to question authenticity and its relevance in an image saturated world.
